Sweet Mother Teresa on the hood of a Mercedes-Benz
I had heard that S2000s were absurdly expensive, but $17,900 CAD for a 2001 model, a base one, with nearly 214k kilometres on it? And that’s the cheapest one on Autotrader? How much crack are S2000s owners and buyers smoking?

Look for an early Boxster S as a comparable alternative. Better overall car in my opinion.

I can’t afford either at this point, I can only afford to dream.

They’ve started appreciating the last few years.

It was bound to happen eventually. Fingers crossed they don’t go stratospheric like many of the other Japanese sportscars.
An RX-8 can still be scored for pennies! Same with an NC Miata! And a... Uh... Wait. What else

98-00 boxster can be had in the Midwest for 7-9K USD with like 80k miles on em. Waay better than a s2000 on the street at least imo

Maybe check Goo-Net for JDM S2Ks? They got a few colors and features that didn’t appear elsewhere.

It’s been like that for years up here. I was cross shopping them in ‘15 with my NB. At half the price, it made the decision very easy.

An S2000 is actually quite responsible because it will probably sell more than you bought it for.

They’re fun to drive, but not the most comfortable. Even at my 170cm height I felt a bit cramped in one.

Yep, it’s on the list of cars I’ve owned and regret not hanging onto. Right up there with my AW11 MR2, E30 coupe, and SVX.

Go get a 2015 FRS/ BRZ, only downside vs an S2k is that it’s not a convertible (I’m not a convertible person because I’m bald). The NC Miata is also a great deal, both are as fun as an S2k, much newer, and same price or cheaper. The S2k is a little faster, but that’s what mods are for.

They sound better as well. With them being so cheap you are more likely to actually drive it.

S2000 o wner here. Can confirm, all of the crack. In USD that’s little over a dollar per RPM. That 9k redline isn’ t cheap, but I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s a bsolutely worth it. Driving experience out weighs that of newer Miatas/GT86s, and w hereas those cars are still on the depreciation curve, the Meth 2000 is most definitely appreciating. Get yourself a decent drivers’ example, enjoy the hell out of it, then sell it for profit. Mine was super rough with 13 0,000 miles (210,000km) when I bought it for $10k USD/$14k CAD two years ago, so $17,000CAD isn’t actually bad if it’s well kept. Also don't see many Miatas with VTEC, so there's that.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I seem to have misplaced my crack pipe...

I have a minty fresh 2008 Chicane Silver with red/black interior, CR wheels, and only ~40-45k miles. I'm thinking I should hold on to it.

Why do you feel early boxsters are a b car? Just curious.

I bought a new S2000 in 2001 with a factory hardtop. It has only 21K miles. I have also had 2 911s, 3 BMW M cars, 2 RX7s, a Fiat 850 Spyder(!) and an MGA. This is the most fun car of them all. A 911 is awesome, but the S2000 is more fun. Due to space constraints I may to reluctantly let it go.

I just don’t see it. The Boxter isn’t nearly as much fun to drive. They are rattle traps that make noise from everywhere . The po rsche is actually more peaky than the s2000. They get bad fuel economy . Not to mention the inevitable IMS bearing failure that costs almost as much as a used s2000 to repair. That’s if the engine isn’t completely ruined when it happens. I’ve been working on Porsches as my living for ten years. There’s a reason that I work on German cars but drive Japanese.

Trust me buddy, don’t sell it!
You’ll be like me and everyone else, having serious withdrawals and stuck not wanting to pay crack-pipe pricing....
How much are you looking for it?! :)

I prefer the way they drive over the S2000. I just like them more than the Honda. Don’t know why, just me.

I prefer the Boxster over the S2000. We all like something different. I like the way they drive, handle, look, and daily more than the Honda. I’ve had better luck with my old 01 Boxster, still going strong at 168k, I put 68k on it when it was new . 2nd owner has do ne the next 100k in the last almost 4 years, took over daily driver status when I rebuilt the gear box in his 348, and he just drives it. I might start driving the 348. Anyway, s ince new I’ve replaced a water pump, did the required maintenance and had the seats recovered, driver side w as worn . Other than that just maintenance, it just goes. I’ve haven’t been as fortunate with the Honda’s. I work on Asian cars day to day . Work on other stuff in my spare time. In fact this week I am doing a clutch on a CGT, and next week we are digging out a SLR and getting it back on the road after being stored 6 years. Just finished some body work on an Enzo. Fun stuff. Can’t wait for the Ford GT to come my way. I haven’t driven the new one yet.

go drive one, but also an ND Miata.
S2K would hold its price however, but based on web reviews the mx5 may be the better drivers car (plus new tech).

150k miles on my s2000 and it’s barely cost anything to maintain . One clutch, one convertibl e top, some tires, and some wiper blades. That’s it over 17 years.
Wouldn’t trade it for 2 boxters

7k USD is like 30k CAD

This is the reason I bought a NC Miata again instead of dipping my toe into S2k ownership.
I ended up nabbing a 2009 Miata with 28k on the clock for $9k. A 2009 (or any year) S2000 with those miles would’ve been three times as much. The Miata will never be rare or overtly desirable like the S2000, but damn near matches it in fun.

Yeah they’re expensive, but also a pretty safe investment at this point. It’ll hold its value/appreciate and also won’t be a maintenance nightmare.
Selling my ‘03 is probably at the top of my list of automotive regrets. There are decent options out there that aren’t ridiculous (and yes, plenty that are beat/modified to death crackpipes) - but still a good penny more than what I sold mine for :(
If I could bridge the gap between the value of my ZHP and a clean reasonable mileage S2000 (i..e not a garage queen, but not falling apart either) I’d probably jump on one (ignoring coronavirus and related employment/economic concerns).
This is local to me, maybe I’m not gagging at the price because it reminds me of my ‘03 so much (was also white, had the same AP2 wheels, but was tan interior instead of red) - https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/d/portland-2007-honda-s2000-ap2-super/7101279204.html
